How to Verify Information Printed On The Product Labels?

Did you know that the products you are consuming could have an expired FSSAI license or ISI mark and could yet be using their quality mark on the product labelling? Moreover, at times, the product information printed on its label is not legible? The bigger question is how to access authentic and complete information on products in legible form?

The answer lies in the scanning of product barcodes. Yes, those black and white parallel lines printed on the label that we most often ignore.

Every barcode has a unique 13-digit code encoded in it, known as GTINs. These are based on global GS1 standards, which are used by manufacturers across the globe to identify their trade objects (products) uniquely. This number is often linked to the reliable, accurate and complete product details. This is why barcodes are scanned at billing counters in shops to fetch its price and other related information, while recording a purchase.

To help brand owners share accurate, reliable and complete information on their products, directly with consumers, GS1 India (a global supply chain standards organisation) has launched a consumer awareness app called — Smart Consumer mobile app. Through this mobile application, consumers can access all the product information by a simple scan of ‘890’ barcode number on product labels. A simple scan will reveal information about the name of the product, shelf like, MRP, net content, specifics of the supplier, consumer care details, ingredients, product quality license number and its validity, etc.

With this, the Smart Consumer app enables consumers and buyers to make informed purchase decisions. Currently, the app hosts information on over 11 million Indian retailed products.

If you scan a product and not find its information, there are good chances that the information on that product is not provided by its manufacturer. In such cases, please use the feedback option provided in the app to reach directly to the manufacturer and ask for the complete product information.
Through this feature, the app also empowers you to send product feedback/complaints on the product directly to its brand owner. It could be anything right from mismatch of information on labels, product quality, or your experience with the product.

Smart Consumer app can be downloaded from Android and IOS play stores.

To buy wisely, download the Smart Consumer mobile app on your mobile phone and start scanning to validate your product information.

GS1 Traceability Service Enables Complete Track and trace of Their Products Across the Supply Chain

In today’s consumerist economy, the sale of a good or service is not merely a transaction – it is a brand promise that what is being sold to a consumer is genuine. The idea that a product isn’t what it's seller claims it to be is highly detrimental to consumer perception. The trust that is built gradually over time depletes instantly and damages the brand, delivering a possibly fatal blow to future sales. Long term sales, an important parameter of overall business success, is compromised when a consumer is given a product that is inauthentic, inferior, or unsafe. A brand’s social dimension, defined by the information shared by consumers online and through word-of-mouth, also takes a hit. With their aggressive focus on product data quality , today’s consumers are also acting as activists, taking action against brands that do not deliver on what they promise. Counterfeit products like medicines, faulty medical devices, contaminated foods and unreliable sourcing practices threate...
